Is this the Best Banh Mi in Vancouver? Trying Banh Mi Thai Hang 2

Let's eat some banh mi! Banh mi is an underrated meal in Vancouver, with affordable prices and multiple locations to choose from in East Vancouver, there are a lot of high quality options. Is banh mi from Banh Mi Thai Hang 2 the best?

Banh Mi is basically a Vietnamese sandwich with a variety of cold cuts, pate, pickled veggies, cilantro, and chili peppers. It's a popular street side eat and quite affordable at that. Other variations use different types of meat, like pork, chicken, and even a vegetarian option like tofu. In Vancouver, they are usually priced around $7-10 for one, making it a tasty and affordable option (listen up Subway).

Thai Hang 2 is primarily designed for takeout, with limited to no in person seating. They have some good offers, like buy 10 banh mi and get 1 free. We ordered 2 banh mi to share: the dac biet (special, the standard original one), and a lemongrass beef sandwich. The dac biet costs $9, and the lemongrass beef cost $10. Both were made quickly after order.

The lemon grass beef was our favourite. Spicy, flavourful, and packed with meat. Very balanced with the veggies. The dac biet was good and was packed with meat. Very well made. I would get the beef again at this location as it was a unique flavour compared to other locations.

If I was in the area of Kingsway in East Vancover, I would return. Was it tasty? Yes. Is it something I'd drive out to specifically get? Probably not (like the Hello Kitty transit cards). All in all, these are tasty banh mi and I'd recommend this spot.

Hits:

  • Very solid Banh Mi; lemongrass beef with the spicy sauce is one of the best I've eaten
  • Price is reasonable, slightly on the higher end but not by much
  • Accepts all payments - cash, credit, debit
Misses:
  • Takeout only
  • Need to eat right away; if you bring it home, the sauce will leak on to the bag
  • The original banh mi (dac biet) could have used a bit more pate; more creamy and rich

Rating: 4.25/5 - a very good banh mi spot. Which banh mi spot is the best in Vancouver? What's next in our food adventures?
