Trying Krispy Kreme in Vancouver | Best Donuts?

Let's eat some donuts! Is Krispy Kreme worth the hype? We try their new location at Broadway and Cambie in Vancouver. These well-known donuts are a popular fundraising option, but historically have not always the most accessible here in Vancouver because the location's located in a suburb about an hour drive away called Delta.

This is a Krispy Kreme Cafe, which is a smaller outpost compared to the Delta location (and other locations you might be familiar with). These cafes have a smaller, limited menu but serve mainly the classics; drinks, and donuts (original glazed and some more premium flavours).

We got the assorted mix of donuts, which is a dozen donuts of varying flavours. The price is very good, around $18 for 12 premium donuts. At this price, this is surprisingly strong value. If I were to buy these donuts at a local, more premium bakery, it would easily cost around $3 a donut. This is also even much better value than going to cheaper Tim Hortons or other similar establishments, especially since those donuts have more simple flavours and designs.

Our spread is very nice; we got a mixture of frosted, custard, and donuts with unique flavours. Some are more basic (like chocolate ring with sprinkles, chocolate donut, cookies and creme), while others are more unique like the Easter themed ones or ones with strawberry flavoured icing.

The donuts tasted very good. Fresh, great texture, and a good chew - the perfect texture. It's not overly cakey, or overly airy. These are just how I like my donuts because they're not overly cakey and they are light but not hollow. I also find that Krispy Kreme donuts hold up very well; the standard glazed can be eaten a couple of days after buying too.

It's great to see a Krispy Kreme location closer to Greater Vancouver. In my opinion, it's a top 3 donut based on its flavour, taste, and airy texture. My favourites among the new donuts I've tried are the pink frosted ones (strawberry flavour) and the cookies and cream donut - the perfect amount of sweetness and texture.

Hits:

  • Oh, oh so good, especially the original glazed donuts
  • Not overly sweet (unlike some cookie companies)
  • Great price for the assorted

Misses:

  • Not the original place where they are baked; may not be as fresh as you perceive because apparently they are shipped from the bigger Delta / Surrey location
  • Donuts that have custard need to be eaten same day, or put into the fridge (very perishable)
Rating: 4.5/5 - the iconic flavour at a more convenient location. Easily a top donut that I've eaten in my life. What's next in our food adventures?
