After a 1-Hour Wait Elsewhere, We Tried Master Hung BBQ Restaurant
Let's eat some Chinese food. Finally...after an hour wait elsewhere. We are reviewing Master Hung BBQ. In my previous blog post, we dined at Royal Seafood Restaurant, or tried to. After an hour wait with no food in sight, we decided to take our hunger to Master Hung BBQ Restaurant across the street. There was a noticeable difference in the way food was served.
Upon arriving, we were seated promptly and this was around 8:00 PM on a Tuesday night. There were still tables in the restaurant. I have to say that despite this being a smaller restaurant, the service and speed that the dishes arrived was very fast and efficient. The kitchen and staff were obviously raring to go and everything arrived within 15 minutes; soup arrived within 5 minutes.
We ordered their pick 4 dish set combo, which comes with soup and red bean soup. This classic Cantonese menu option allows you to pick a set number of dishes from 70 entrees for a set price. We ordered the following dishes (in order of photos)
- Peking Style Pork Chops (more savoury and sweet compared to sweet and sour pork)
- Assorted BBQ: Char Siu and Chicken
- Beef Brisket with Daikon in Hotpot
- Black Pepper Beef with Mixed Vegetables
I've always felt that when dining in large groups, these set combos provide significant benefits: they are customizable, there are a variety of choices (over 70 entrees to choose from), and the meal comes with soup and dessert. You might opt for fish, different proteins, or even a vegetarian option. The portions are also decent as we had leftovers to bring home (4 entrees for 4 people). You could even opt for one less dish as well.
Rice is not included in the combo; instead of paying $2 per bowl, we ordered the rice bucket for $8, which was a great choice because the rice bucket kept the rice hot rather than in individual small bowls.
Now on to the review:
- Peking Pork Chops - very good, crispy, and flavourful
- Assorted BBQ - could be a bit more juicy but this was at the end of the night, flavour very good and savoury
- Beef and Daikon hotpot - this was a miss; lacking flavour and we had to add soy sauce and chili
- Black Pepper Beef - delicious, tender beef with a kick from the black pepper (my favourite)
Overall the family felt that the food was delicious, served quick, and the service was efficient. We're not in this neighbourhood often nor live around here, but for a family comfort meal, this truly hit the spot. The exterior is unassuming but the food has a certain charm and appeal to it. It's not fussy or ornate, but simple, good food made with care and attention.
Hits:
- Great value for the combo (soup and dessert)
- None of the dishes were terrible; all hits across the board except the beef brisket bowl
- Served quick and efficient - not Michelin service but just to deliver the food to the table
Misses:
- A bit of a hole in the wall, don't come for the decor
- Small restaurant with limited parking and space; need to make a reservation
Rating: 4.25/5 - thank you for a great meal and quick service. It hit the spot after waiting for an hour with no food! What's next in our food adventures?
