Dairy Queen Viral Cupcakes – Worth the Hype or Overrated?

Let's eat some 'cupcakes'! Dairy Queen's new 'cupcakes' are all the rage. Are they worth the hype or overrated? Let's dive into a quick taste test and review. An important note is that while these are called 'cupcakes', they are more of a frozen dessert and not a traditional baked cupcake.

DQ cupcakes are a mini version of the popular ice cream cake; chocolate ice cream on the bottom, a fudgy, cookie crumb middle, and vanilla ice cream on top; topped with sprinkles and some whipped cream. I can see this product being popular with those who want the DQ flavours and experience but in a more manageable size and portion.

The price of these cupcakes was 2 for $11.99, which at roughly $6 each is decent value considering a small blizzard with customizations is about that price. A single would cost about $7-8. These cupcakes are not meant to be heated up and the multiple layers create textural contrast. At this size and price, these are perfect for when you don't want to buy an entire ice cream cake and want the same textural components.

I think DQ is on to something here. At $30-50 for a large cake, it's hard to enjoy ice cream cake for 2 but for a smaller portion for friends or for hangouts, this is the perfect small treat from DQ. It's also served in the plastic see-through to go cup so you can see all of the layers.

Overall, this is a tasty treat featuring the iconic DQ flavours. If I were to improve this dessert, I would like a bit more of the middle part relative to the ice cream: the fudge and chocolate crunch part tastes good and the dessert as a whole was very ice cream forward. My relatives felt it was a win for DQ and this should easily be a part of its permanent menu moving forward.

DQ has been a hit in our family for years (as part of birthdays and celebrations) and these cupcakes live up to the hype. While I wouldn’t go out of my way to get them, they’re a great option if you’re already craving DQ. We’d definitely order them again. Luckily they were in stock, but I'd probably call them if I wanted one.

Hits:

  • Tasty and features both vanilla and chocolate flavours
  • Portion size perfect for one person or for a couple sharing
  • Price point makes sense and a good option if you don't want a blizzard

Misses:

  • Not always available; need to phone ahead to pre-order or reserve
  • Only available a limited time? Not sure why...
  • Wish the middle was a bit more chocolately or had more of the cookie crumb
Rating: 4.5/5 - tasty, delicious, and worth the price. What's next in our food adventures?
